Ice In -- Ice OutAccording to our very reliable source, Frank Leonbruno, Bolton, the freeze-over of Lake George took place on Jan. 31, 1999. The ice hung in there until April 4. Other interesting statistics for this century: The April 4 ice-out is the 79th time that ice-out occurred in April. Freezeover has happened as early as Dec. three times; in Jan., 72 times; and in Feb., 13 times. Ice-outs occurred six times in March; 79 times in April; and twice in May. Earliest ice-out was on Mar.21, 1983 and the latest on May 1, 1940. Leonbruno's criterion for ice-outs is a traditional one, dating back to an era when steamboats were the predominant mode of transportation on the lake. Using this standard, ice-out occurs when a boat can navigate from the Lake George Steamboat Dock in Lake George Village, through the Narrows and Mother Bunch Islands, to Baldwin, the home of the Lake George Steamboat Company's dry dock and the most northern mooring for the company's boats. Conversely, freeze-over occurs when a boat cannot make the same voyage.
